Spotlight on Scholarships & Innovation

Established in 1995 the W. J. Flynn Endowed Scholarship, set up by Mutual of America Life Insurance Company, honours the legacy of William (Bill) J. Flynn, a first-generation Irish American with roots in County Mayo and County Down. As former CEO, Bill was widely recognized for his visionary leadership and the outstanding performance of Mutual of America, earning respect across the life insurance industry.

UL Foundation are delighted to report that the most recent University of Limerick recipient of the W. J. Flynn Postgraduate Endowed Scholarship, Aminat Adeyemo, a PhD candidate in Nursing and Midwifery is making groundbreaking research exploring the integration of robotic technologies in professional nursing practice, with a particular focus on the absence of established guidelines and policies in this emerging field.

Aminat has published high-impact journal articles that underscore a critical gap in regulation and emphasize the urgent need for evidence-based frameworks to guide the use of robotics in healthcare. Her work is paving the way for informed policymaking and stakeholder engagement.

Currently, Aminat is preparing to launch a convergent mixed methods study aimed at understanding nurses’ perceptions and readiness to adopt robotic technologies. “Securing ethical approval is my top priority,” she notes. “Once approved, I’ll combine quantitative data from the wider nursing community with qualitative insights from key stakeholders to develop actionable recommendations that support education, policy, and regulation.”
