Lloyd’s Insurance Visits UL to Inspire Future Insurance Leaders and Launch New Scholarship

UL Foundation was delighted to attend a special lecture delivered by Hugh Governey, Country Manager and General Representative for Ireland at Lloyd’s, to University of Limerick’s Bachelor of Business, Insurance and Risk students.

In a fascinating and insightful presentation, Hugh traced the remarkable evolution of Lloyd’s from its origins in a London coffee house in the late 17th century to its position today as the world’s leading marketplace for specialist insurance. He highlighted how Lloyd’s continues to drive innovation, build resilience, and create opportunities in response to the complex risks and changing needs of modern society.

The event also provided an opportunity to launch the new Eamonn Egan Scholarship in Insurance, generously supported by Lloyd’s and established in memory of their esteemed colleague, Eamonn Egan, who sadly passed away last year.

The scholarship will recognise and support outstanding student achievement in insurance education at UL. Two scholarships, valued at €5,000 each, will be awarded to the highest-performing students from the Bachelor of Business Studies or Bachelor of Arts in International Business programmes who achieve the top results in the Insurance Organisation and Markets module during the 2026/27 academic year and subsequently enrol in the Master of Science in Insurance and Risk Management programme in 2027/28.

Lloyd’s has enjoyed a longstanding and valued relationship with the University of Limerick, due in no small part to the contribution of the late Eamonn Egan, who served as an Adjunct Professor and regular guest lecturer at UL. Through Eamonn’s support and engagement, UL has collaborated with Lloyd’s on a range of initiatives over the years, including Horizon Europe research projects, academic publications, and presentations to the Lloyd’s Emerging Risk Committee.

Hugh also highlighted Lloyd’s commitment to fostering innovation through initiatives such as the Lloyd’s Lab, the organisation’s renowned insurtech accelerator programme. This year’s programme featured a strong Irish dimension, with a focus on three critical areas: flood resilience, cyber and AI risks, and supporting export-focused businesses.

UL Foundation extends its sincere thanks to Hugh Governey and Lloyd’s for their continued partnership and commitment to supporting the next generation of insurance and risk professionals.
