UL Foundation Mourns the Passing of Director, Sir Terry Wogan

It is with great sadness that we hear the news of the passing of UL Foundation Board member, Sir Terry Wogan.

A close friend of the University, Sir Terry was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University in 2004 and joined the Board of the UL Foundation in 2006.

Speaking about Sir Terry’s death, UL President, Professor Don Barry said:

“The University of Limerick community has been saddened to learn of the passing of our honorary graduate Terry Wogan. Terry was a great friend of the University, a member of the UL Foundation Board and a widely-respected and beloved figure UL has been proud to be associated with over many years. Our honorary doctorates aim to acknowledge the remarkable contribution of individuals to the betterment of the lives of those past, present, and to come, so Terry was an obvious choice when he was conferred with an honorary doctorate in 2004 to recognise his major contribution to improving relations between the peoples of Britain and Ireland”.

His citation concluded “For all of these accomplishments, for his quiet championing of values and principles, for his consummate professionalism, for his service to the common good of the people of Ireland and Great Britain and for the pleasure he has given, and continues to give, to millions of listeners and viewers, it is timely and appropriate that Terry Wogan should be honoured by the University of his native city”.

Sir Terry was a wonderful Ambassador for Limerick and he will be greatly missed. We offer our sincere sympathy to his family and friends at this sad time.
